AI's Coding Leap Raises Alarm Over Bitcoin Infrastructure Security

UToday · 6 Sept 2026
Key Takeaway Businesses relying on open-source software, including cryptocurrency tools, should ensure code is regularly audited and patched quickly, as AI is making vulnerability discovery faster and more accessible to attackers.

A prominent pseudonymous Bitcoin commentator known as CobraBitcoin has warned the cryptocurrency industry to prepare for the possibility of a major exploit as frontier AI models become dramatically better at writing code and finding software vulnerabilities. His concern centres on the fact that much of Bitcoin's critical infrastructure, including Bitcoin Core, Lightning implementations and wallet software, is open-source and can be analysed at machine speed by AI systems.

The warning follows the release of two new AI models, OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1, both built to handle longer and more complex software engineering tasks. OpenAI says Astra is the first of its broadly deployed models to reach the 'Critical' cybersecurity capability level under its own risk framework, meaning it can discover previously unknown flaws and build new exploit techniques with minimal human direction. Astra scored a perfect 100% on a benchmark testing whether AI can turn known bugs into working exploits, up sharply from its predecessor's 78.5%.

The risk is not theoretical: in May, researcher Taylor Hornby found a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool that could have let an attacker create unlimited counterfeit ZEC undetected, prompting an emergency coordinated response from Zcash developers.
