DeFi Platform Moonwell Suspends Borrowing After $8.7M Exploit
Decentralised finance platform Moonwell is investigating a security incident affecting its MAMO Core Market on the Base blockchain network. As a precaution, the platform has suspended new borrowing while the issue is examined.
Security firms CertiK and PeckShield, which specialise in tracking blockchain exploits, estimate losses at approximately $8.7 million. The incident is believed to stem from manipulation of the MAMO token's price, a common attack method in decentralised finance where attackers exploit pricing mechanisms to drain funds from lending platforms.
While this incident involves cryptocurrency infrastructure rather than traditional business systems, it highlights a broader lesson for any business relying on digital financial platforms: rapid, decisive action when irregular activity is detected can limit damage, and third-party monitoring services play a valuable role in catching exploits early.
