The Sandbox Cross-Chain Bridge Hacked, Creating Fake SAND Tokens
The Sandbox, a blockchain-based gaming platform, has confirmed that its cross-chain bridge was exploited on August 22, 2026, allowing attackers to create unbacked SAND tokens on the Base and BNB Smart Chain networks. In response, the studio has halted bridging activity to contain the damage.
According to The Sandbox, holdings of SAND on the Ethereum and Polygon networks remain unaffected by the breach, suggesting the exploit was isolated to specific bridge connections rather than the token's core infrastructure. Cross-chain bridges, which allow digital assets to move between different blockchain networks, have become a frequent target for attackers due to the complexity of the systems and the large sums of value they hold.
While this incident centres on a cryptocurrency platform rather than a traditional business system, it serves as a reminder that any software connecting multiple systems or platforms can become a point of failure if not properly secured. Businesses using blockchain-based services or third-party integrations should stay alert to vendor security advisories and be prepared to pause transactions if irregular activity is reported.
