Sandbox Metaverse Platform Hit by Bridge Exploit, Billions in Tokens Minted
The Sandbox, a metaverse gaming platform behind the SAND cryptocurrency token, has confirmed that attackers exploited a vulnerability in its cross-chain bridge infrastructure connecting the Base and BNB Smart Chain networks. The flaw allowed the attacker to mint an estimated 14.9 billion unbacked SAND tokens without proper backing, undermining the token's value and integrity.
Once the exploit was discovered, The Sandbox moved quickly to shut down the affected bridges to prevent further damage. In response to the incident, Coinbase delisted SAND futures products, reflecting the seriousness with which exchanges treat confirmed token integrity breaches.
Cross-chain bridges, which allow assets to move between different blockchain networks, have repeatedly proven to be a weak point in the cryptocurrency ecosystem, as they often rely on complex smart contract logic that can contain exploitable flaws. While this incident targeted a blockchain platform rather than a traditional business, it's a reminder that any organisation relying on third-party digital infrastructure, including payment or token systems, should understand how quickly a technical flaw can be weaponised and how fast providers need to respond.
